Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

The EVO-STIK League South lost two of its scheduled games on Saturday, but the top six were all in action, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Romulus were Basford`s latest victims, losing 3-0 in dreadful conditions at Greenwich Avenue. Matt Thornhill after 34 minutes, Liam Hearn on 72 minutes and youngster Harry Wakefield four minutes from time sealed the Nottinghamshire side`s latest win.

Alvechurch lost second spot after being held to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle Town, where both goals came within a minute of each other 10 minutes into the second half – Rod Orlando-Young opening the scoring for Castle and Luke Yates responding straight from the kick-off.

Frickley`s 5-3 win in the snow at Westfield Lane against Lincoln United took them into second on goal difference.

The Yorkshire hosts found themselves 2-0 down to goals from Andy Toyne from the penalty spot after 18 minutes and Matt Cotton 17 minutes later. But by the time that Jack Wightwick scored United`s third in stoppage time at the end of the game, the Blues were 4-2 up.

Danny Burns bagged a brace on 50 and 66 minutes, Jacob Hazel netted a 69th minute penalty, Tyler Walton on 75 minutes and then a Gavin Allott spot-kick after Wightwick's goal.

Bedworth United are a point behind in fourth and won 2-0 at the Oval against fellow top six contenders Chasetown, Alex Troke`s penalty giving the Greenbacks a 25th minute lead that Jamie McAteer eventually added to 17 minutes from time.

Stamford AFC are two points behind Bedworth after beating sixth-placed Leek Town 1-0 at the Zeeco Stadium, courtesy of a 23rd minute Kieran Wells goal.

Stocksbridge Park Steels maintained their top six challenge with a 2-1 win at mid-table Loughborough Dynamo, thanks to Ben Rhodes after 28 minutes and then a Rory Coleman spot-kick five minutes from time – all after Tolani Omotola had given Dynamo a 16th minute lead.

Elsewhere, Gresley FC's hopes of avoiding the drop were given a massive boost after beating Corby Town 2-0 at Steel Park, with Danny Quinn after 34 minutes and Ollie Bassett 20 minutes from time doing the damage.

Spalding United and Belper Town shared a 1-1 draw at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields in the other game played, with Danny Brooks` 11th minute penalty being cancelled out by Lee Williamson seven minutes into the second half.
