Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

Basford United took another step towards clinching the EVO-STIK League South title after beating nine-man Kidsgrove Athletic 2-0 at The Novus Stadium on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The tide turned Basford's way after only 17 minutes when Grove were reduced to ten-men when skipper Ross Davidson was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on Lewis Carr. The visitors took the lead in the 20th minute when Rob Duffy`s first attempt was saved by Dave Parton but his second effort was too much for the keeper to keep out.

Kidsgrove went down to nine-men in the 75th minute after Rhys Thompson received his second yellow card of the game. Basford got their second goal five minutes later when striker Liam Hearn scored a header from a corner.

Bedworth United now head the chasing pack after they hammered Market Drayton Town 5-1 in Shropshire to send the hosts to second-bottom spot.

After Drayton had taken a 10th minute lead through David Howarth, the Greenbacks were 2-1 ahead at the break through Levi Rowley and Tom Sharpe and then a Luke Keen brace followed Alex Troke`s 53rd minute third.

Frickley Athletic, Alvechurch, Stamford AFC, Chasetown and Leek Town look the likeliest to be the other top six contenders.

Frickley won 2-1 at Coles Lane against new-look bottom side Romulus, who only trail Market Drayton by a point though.

Tyler Marton after 55 minutes and then Tom Dugdale on 78 minutes after Romario Martin had equalised five minutes earlier, were on target for the Blues.

Frickley moved above Alvechurch into third after the Worcestershire side were beaten 2-1 at Lye Meadow by Spalding United, whose Ben Davison bagged a brace in the 20th and then 83rd minutes after Ashley Carter had equalised on the hour-mark.

Stamford were held to a 0-0 draw at Christchurch Meadow by Belper Town, while Chasetown beat Carlton Town 3-0 at home with first half goals from Jacob Lovatt, Dan Cocks and George Cater.

Leek were surprisingly beaten 3-0 at Harrison Park by lowly Peterborough Sports, whose Jordan Macleod, Avelino Vieira and Andre Williams were the scorers.

Elsewhere, Lincoln United maintained their outside chances of making the play-offs with a 5-2 hammering of Corby Town at Ashby Avenue in which Charlie Ward, Sean Wright, Matt Cotton, Paul Grimes and Phil Watt outgunned the Steelmen`s Jamie Anton and Jordon Crawford.

Aaron Burt and James Askey scored the goals that earned Newcastle Town a good 2-0 win at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels, while Waide Fairhurst`s first goal for Sheffield FC saw them beat fellow strugglers Gresley FC at The Moat.

Cleethorpes Town beat Loughborough Dynamo 3-1 at home in the day`s other game, with Curtis Bateman bagging a brace for the hosts either side of a Brody Robertson effort – Ali Smith replying.
