S/East round-up: Top two win by four

By James Gordon

Stamford lead Leek Town at the top of the BetVictor Northern Premier S/East Division at Christmas.

Just two goals separate the two sides, though Leek do have a game in hand.

A 4-0 win at home to Wisbech Town wasn’t enough for Leek to displace their rivals, who were 5-1 winners at home to Glossop North End.

Sean Wright and Tom Siddons scored a brace apiece in Stamford’s win, while Leek had four different scorers in Matthew Bell, Darren Chadwick, Rob Stevenson and Tim Grice.

They have a six point cushion over third placed Cleethorpes Town, who beat Ilkeston 2-1 on Sunday.

Belper Town are fourth and their games in hand certainly make them contenders for the title.

Loanee forward Evan Garnett scored two in a 5-2 home win over Market Drayton Town.

Kidsgrove Athletic are now five games unbeaten after they ran out 3-0 winners at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

All the goals came in the first half, with Ruben Wiggins-Thomas opening the scoring from the penalty spot on nine minutes.

He added a second on 27 minutes before Josh Lundstram made it three, three minutes before the break.

Frickley also won 3-0 away from home, all their goals coming in the second half at Chasetown.

Jake Hazel, Sam Cable and Jonathon Margetts fired Dave Frecklington’s side within touching distance of the play-offs.

The only draw of the afternoon came at Spalding United, who battled out a 2-2 against Sutton Coldfield Town.

Joel Brownhill put Spalding in front on the stroke of half time. Isai Marselia equalised nine minutes after the restart and Reece Gibson put Sutton Coldfield in front on the hour.

The flurry of goals ended on 63 minutes when Lewis Brownhill scored the fourth and final goal of the game.

Elsewhere, Newcastle Town beat Sheffield 3-0 and Craig Mitchell’s first half goal fired Worksop Town to a 1-0 win over Loughborough Dynamo.
