Skipper steps up at Grantham

Grantham Town

Grantham Town have appointed captain Ben Saunders and Under 16s boss Eddie Humphries as caretaker managers ahead of Saturday’s Evo-Stik NPL Premier clash at home to Nantwich Town.

The duo take the helm at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium following the resignations of joint managers Jimmy Albans and Wayne Hallcro on Monday after the Gingerbreads’ 2-0 defeat at Ilkeston.

Grantham say the pair's appointment as temporary managers marks a clear statement of intent that it is 'business as usual' in the wake of the managerial upheaval.

Saunders, pictured, and Humphries took their first training session at the Meres on Thursday night as Grantham step up their hunt for a permanent manager.

Saunders notched his 150th appearance for Grantham at Ilkeston on Monday night after being one of the first signings made by Albans and Hallcro when they took charge back in 2009.

Humphries joined Grantham’s set-up at the start of the season when his team started playing under the club’s banner. Since the start of the campaign, his side have recorded a number of notable victories to progress in both their league and league cup competitions.

Humphries will be a busy man on Saturday before teaming up with Saunders to take the helm for the Dabbers clash. In the morning his youth side take on Lutterworth Athletic Academy.
