Stalybridge Celtic land Liverpool goalkeeper

Young Liverpool goalkeeper Luke Hewitson has joined Stalybridge Celtic on loan until January.

Hewitson moved to Liverpool as an U15s player from Sunderland in 2019 and went on to sign his first professional contract with the club in 2021.

The 18-year-old has already gained impressive experience, playing 12 games in the U18s Premier League and also playing in the UEFA Youth League, making his debut in their quarter-final against Juventus in Italy.

He will spend the first half of the 2023/24 season at Bower Fold, linking up with a Celtic side that have won one and drawn one of their opening two league fixtures in the Pitching In NPL West Division.

Hewitson could come straight in to make his debut against Runcorn Linnets in the FA Cup preliminary round on Saturday.

He will also provide cover following the red card picked up by Elliot Wynne in their opening-weekend victory at Hanley Town.

Manager James Kinsey said: “With Elliot getting sent off last week, we had to move fast. We really appreciate Liverpool assisting us with this, and we’re hopeful of building a positive relationship with them moving forward.

“Luke trained with us last night and although he’s young, he’s a very good goalkeeper.

"He has had some unbelievable experience, and we’re hoping that he can join the list of players that have played here in the past and gone on to big things.”
