The former Nottingham Forest, Cheltenham star and Hibernian star, pictured, was stretchered off at the Nanpantan Sports Ground after being hurt just over half an hour into United's 3-1 win in EVO-STIK League South with his side winning 1-0.
The fixture was suspended for approximately half an hour as the attacking midfielder, who signed for United in March 2017 after successful spells at Buxton, Shaw Lane and Gainsborough Trinity, was treated on the pitch by paramedics before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
Thankfully, an air ambulance which landed at the ground, pictured, was not needed after Thornhill showed signs of recovery and he was ferried to hospital by regular ambulance before the leaders went on to secure their tenth win on the road.
Basford United secretary Tracie Witton said: "Matt seemed a lot better and more with it when he was taken away. All our thoughts are with Matt for a speedy recovery and we hope to see him back in a United shirt as soon as he is well and is given the go-ahead by doctors. His well being is paramount and we hope everything is okay for him."
