Step 4 round-up: Monday 10th April

By James Gordon

Stamford are the champions of the NPL Midlands Division, despite not kicking a ball on Monday.

Their game at home to Spalding United was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

Their promotion was confirmed as closest challengers Halesowen Town lost 3-0 at home to Sutton Coldfield Town. Cameron Collins opened the scoring, before Rhys Hilton added a late double to secure the victory.

Elsewhere, Sporting Khalsa missed the chance to cement their place in the play-offs, after falling to a 2-0 defeat at Chasetown. Luke Yates’ double was enough for The Scholars to claim all three points, and keep them in the hunt for a play-off place.

Boldmere St Michaels also slipped up, as they were beaten at home to Harborough Town. Ben Williams’ penalty was all that separated the two sides. The Bees are also still well in the hunt for a play-off place.

Coleshill Town were the only team in the top six to win on Monday, as they beat Bedworth United. Kai Tonge’s goal just before the hour was enough for the three points.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, Dereham Town did their survival hopes no harm with a 1-0 win at already-relegated Yaxley. Matt Blake scored the late winner to put The Magpies three points off safety.

Gresley Rovers also won to put a gap between themselves and the relegation places. They won 1-0 at Shepshed Dynamo, with James Spruce scoring the only goal.

The other game to take place saw Hinckley and Loughborough Dynamo play out a 1-1 draw.

In the East Division, Stockton Town secured their play-off place after a thrilling 4-3 win over Consett. The Anchors were 3-1 and 4-2 up, but were able to see it out despite the grandstand finish.

Meanwhile, champions Worksop Town beat the NPL record for unbeaten games, as they went past 34 games unbeaten. Their only defeat came on the opening day of the season against Stockton Town.

They beat Carlton Town 4-0, with a result that leaves The Millers inside the relegation places.

Hebburn Town have all but confirmed their place in the play-offs, despite a 1-1 draw against 10-man Dunston. Liam Murray’s second half leveller for the Hornets rescued a point. They are all but secured, but missed the chance to put it beyond doubt.

Stocksbridge Park Steels are also on the verge of securing their place in the play-offs. They beat Pontefract Collieries 2-0, thanks to goals from Ross Goodwin and Tomas Poole.

Long Eaton United missed the chance to secure their play-off place, after a 1-0 defeat at home to Sheffield. Stephen Brogan scored the winner just before the break.

At the bottom of the table, Shildon’s late comeback was in vain, as they were beaten at home to North Shields. They were 3-0 down, but goals from Billy Greulich-Smith and Jack Vaulks set up a tense finale, but The Robins held on for the points.

Grantham Town won the big game at the bottom, as they claimed all three points at Lincoln United. Nathan Tyson’s goal lifted The Gingerbreads out of the relegation places at Lincoln’s expense.

Elsewhere in the league, Brighouse Town won big at struggling Ossett United, and Tadcaster Albion won a five-goal thriller against Bridlington Town.

In the West, Clitheroe took a huge step towards securing a play-off place, after a 4-1 win over Colne.

Despite falling behind early, Reece Webb-Foster’s penalty sent the sides in level at half-time. From there, the Blues took control. Sefton Gonzales, Billy Priestley and Abimbola Obasoto completed the scoring.

Witton Albion were able to close the gap to the play-off places, after they beat 1874 Northwich 1-0. Elliot Rokka scored the only goal.

Mossley were also able to keep up the pace, with a 3-0 win over struggling Glossop North End. Jack Bannister grabbed himself a double, and Eden Bailey completed the scoring for the Lilywhites.

At the bottom of the table, Widnes slipped into the relegation places as they lost 3-1 at home to Skelmersdale United. Declan McLoughlin’s double set United on their way. Sean Miller pulled one back for Widnes, before Stephen Milne completed the scoring.

That result, coupled with Newcastle Town getting an away win at third-placed Leek Town, means the Castle are now out of the relegation places. James Askey scored the only goal.

Bootle are also looking over their shoulders, after a 2-2 draw at Prescot Cables. The Bucks seemed on course for victory, but James Foley scored a late penalty to rescue a point for the Cables.

Hanley Town also did their hopes of surviving the drop no harm, as they earned a 1-1 draw against champions Macclesfield. They had looked on course to beat the Silkmen thanks to Sam Turner’s goal, but Dan Sweeney levelled with eight minutes to go.

Elsewhere, Workington were able to consolidate second place with a win at Kidsgrove Athletic and Trafford stayed eighth after beating already-relegated Ramsbottom United.
