Step 4 round-up: Saturday 18 February

By James Gordon

Recap the latest action from Step 4 of the Northern Premier League…

Pitching In NPL East Division leaders Worksop Town re-established an 18-point lead at the top of the division after scoring in either half to win 2-0 away at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Goals from Jay Rollins and Josh Wilde were enough for the Tigers on the road as they overcame a potential banana skin against one of the teams pushing for a play-off spot.

It proved to be a difficult afternoon for some of the chasing pack, with Stockton Town, Hebburn Town and Dunston all dropping points.

The surprise result of the day came at the Bradley Football Development Centre as Grimsby Borough were emphatically beaten 5-0 by North Shields.

In the NPL West Division, Macclesfield moved six points clear at the top thanks to a 2-0 home win over Glossop North End.

Dylan Fage broke the deadlock on his Silkmen debut, with Ntumba Massanka wrapping up victory five minutes into the second half.

Second-placed Leek Town lost ground after a goalless draw away at Hanley Town, and in two other matches with repercussions on the play-off race, Workington AFC and Clitheroe picked up maximum points with 3-1 and 2-1 wins over Runcorn Linnets and Mossley respectively.

Further down the division, Widnes boosted their chances of survival with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at mid-table Witton Albion.

In the NPL Midlands Division, table-topping Halesowen Town suffered a surprise 4-2 defeat at Corby Town.

A Jordan O’Brien hat-trick helped the Steelmen inflict a first league defeat in 13 matches upon the league leaders.

That result allowed Stamford to draw level at the top after a 1-0 win away at fifth-placed Boldmere St Michaels, and Spalding United and Sporting Khalsa also picked up three points in their fight for a top-five spot.

There were big wins for Coleshill Town and Loughborough Dynamo, while James Spruce scored twice as Gresley Rovers beat basement side Yaxley 4-0.
