Tague, 18, spent the majority of last season at Matlock Town, scoring two goals in 10 appearances. He didn’t make an appearance during his brief spell at Gainsborough, curtailed by the premature end to the season.
Manager Steve Chettle said: “We are delighted to complete the deal for James for the next two seasons. James was another of the players we have been monitoring and his name has been forwarded to me from various avenues.
“His pedigree is very good as an Academy project at Derby County and a scholarship at Mansfield Town.
“James is another player that fits our profile and to have another talented midfield player, who is left footed. We are all keen to get back together and start preparation for next season, whenever that may be.”
Tague spent eight years at Derby County and a further two years on the apprenticeship scheme at Mansfield Town.
He caught the eye of Chettle in Matlock’s Integro League Cup win over Basford in January.
