Thompson set for speedy return

Ramsbottom United's joint managers Paul Fildes and Mark Fell have signed central defender Luke Thompson from Nelson for the upcoming EVO-STIK Northern Premier League campaign.

The Rams - preparing to bounce back next term in EVO-STIK NPL First Division North after suffering the first ever relegation in the club's 50-year history at the end of last season - announced the arrival of the combative 25-year-old, pictured, on Monday.

Thompson has also turned out for Padiham and Colne and Fildes believes the Rams could have unearthed a new gem for the 2016-17 season at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium.

He said: "Luke is raw talent, he's a defender who loves to defend which is something of a rarity nowadays. He's a leader, strong and powerful and can chip in with goals as well. We're keen to have a real hard work mentality at the club and Luke fits the bill."

Thompson is set to make a speedy return to Nelson's Victoria Park on Saturday (July 16) when the Rams make the short journey up to the home of their North West Counties neighbours to kick off their pre-season programme.
