Tigers keen on George Taft

Former Leicester City defender George Taft has joined Worksop Town.

Taft, now 30, began his career in the Foxes academy and went on to sign a professional contract in March 2011. During his time in the Midlands, he was loaned out to Kettering Town, Karlstad BK and York City.

Taft was released by Premier League-bound Leicester in 2014 and joined League Two side Burton Albion, where he became a regular for the Brewers as they were promoted to League One for the first time in the club's history.

The defender joined Cambridge United the following summer on loan, but that was cut short due to him suffering a serious ACL injury.

Mansfield Town was Taft’s next home in May 2016, but he re-joined Cambridge on loan the following summer and would make the move permanent at the end of the 2017/18 season.

Stints at Bolton Wanderers and Scunthorpe United followed for the experienced defender, who has been without a club following his release from the Irons at the end of last season.

“We have been working for a long time to get George through the door and with the way that the squad is currently, it is vital that we get him through the door and get him in," Worksop boss Craig Parry said.

“He’s a big, strong lad that has played at a high level throughout his career, so it’s good to get him in to help us out and hopefully he will be really good for us.

“I believe he brings competition into an area where we have been looking to strengthen since the beginning of pre-season.

“We have had to be patient and wait for the right time to bring him in, and that’s now. It’s great to have him on board - his experience will be vital.

“I like to have different types of centre-halves: a dominant one, one with pace, and someone with size. George will bring power and force to the back four, and as a left-footed defender, he brings balance to the backline which will boost us.”
