Tuesday's First Division North review

By David Watters

It was a Tuesday night of surprises in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division North, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leaders Farsley Celtic were stunned by second-bottom Goole AFC, who put in a superb defensive display to grind out a shock 2-1 victory at Throstle Nest.

Paul Walker gave the home side the boost of an early fifth minute lead from fully 30 yards. But that lead lasted barely three minutes when Ryan Watson was adjudged to have brought down Danny Chambers in the box and Bobby Johnson duly converted the resulting penalty.

And five minutes before half-time, Johnson grabbed his and the Vikings second. The second half was a backs-to-the-wall effort by the visitors but they held on for three cracking points which moved them to within five points of third-bottom Prescot Cables.

The Celts hold onto top spot with a game in hand on second-placed Lancaster City.

Bottom-markers Burscough recorded their first win in six games and only their sixth three-point haul of the season by causing another surprise with a 3-2 victory at fourth-placed Glossop North End.

After a delayed start due to traffic problems, Ben Richardson put the Hillmen in front after 17 minutes. But they failed to add to that and after 73 minutes the Linnets were back on level terms through Lee Hughes.

Three minutes later, Hughes put the visitors into a surprise lead before Karl Jones scored what looked like the equaliser six minutes from time, only for Adam Gilchrist to pop up with Burscough`s winner four minutes later.

Despite that excellent win, it`s still going to take a remarkable turnaround for Burscough to avoid the drop as they are still 11 points behind Prescot with only six matches remaining.

Elsewhere, Brighouse Town and Ramsbottom United were both looking to boost their outside play-off hopes on Tuesday.

Brighouse achieved their aim with a comfortable 4-0 win at Dimple Wells against lowly Ossett Albion to move to seventh and to within four points of the top five but Rammy were beaten at home by Hyde United.

Albion were up against it for 40 minutes of the first half but did well to hold out before Mike Fish out the visitors ahead with a downward header at the far post.

Despite Albion coming out in determined mood after the break, a second headed goal from Ben Wharton on 53 minutes looked to have sealed the result before they added two more, Luke Parkin after 69 minutes and Tom Haigh five minutes later as they attacked at will.

Rammy found themselves a 17th minute goal down at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium when Phattharaphol Khamsuk put Hyde in front.

Lee Gaskell equalised two minutes after half-time, only for Khamsuk to restore the Tigers advantage less than two minutes later. The next goal was vital – and Hyde got it, courtesy of Jamal Branker 14 minutes from time.

The only game with little riding on it apart from pride and final placings saw Colwyn Bay move level on points with hosts Droylsden and above them on goal difference after a 4-2 win at the Butcher`s Arms.

Bay`s experienced goalscorer Jamie Rainford gave them an early eighth minute lead that Scott Metcalfe levelled four minutes later before Danny Bartle restored the visitors` lead six minutes before half-time.

Domaine Rouse equalised on 65 minutes, only for Tom Schofield to restore Bay`s lead three minutes later and Rainford to make sure with his second of the game in the 73rd minute.
