Tuesday's First Division South action review

There were just a couple of matches in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South on Tuesday night after Gresley's game against Romulus was postponed, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leek Town scored five goals in defeating basement boys Hucknall Town and in doing so moved themselves five places up the league table to thirteenth. Leek's unbeaten run now extends to six games in the league.

However, the hosts had a shock when Hucknall took the lead after 90 seconds. Alex Ford nipped in behind the defence and prodded the ball past Daniel Lloyd-Weston and in via a post.

Leek did little to rectify the situation in the opening 20 minutes as they struggled to string any passes together or create any chances. Finally, after 24 minutes, Leek created an opening and it resulted in the equaliser. Tim Sanders long pass forward was latched on to by Tim Grice, who neatly took the chance first time and lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Three minutes later the game and the game changed when the visitors Alton Rennalls went in with a high challenge on Dan Shelley leaving the referee little option other than to show a red card.

On 31 minutes Leek took the lead and Sanders was the provider again as his pin-point cross from the right found Matt Haddrell, who headed powerfully home. It took just five minutes for the home side to extend their lead when Shelley hit a 30-yard screamer that flew into the top corner.

The visitors re-organised for the second half and it took Leek a while to start creating chances again but when they did found James Martin in fine form. The keeper made six good saves in the last half an hour to deny Grice three times, Shelley and substitutes Matt Bell and Adam Roberts.

However, Leek did manage to score twice more and it was Sanders who completed a hat-trick of assists as his right wing cross was headed home by Anthony Danylyk on 77 minutes.

The fifth came in added time when Sanders was denied a well-deserved goal by a clearance off the line that the keeper then gathered. Bizarrely, the referee deemed this a backpass, yellow carded the keeper and awarded Blues a free-kick about four yards out which Shelley lashed hard and low into the corner of the net.

The other game between Sheffield FC and Mickleover Sports ended all-square at 2-2.

Chris Adam gave Club a 14th minute lead that Ellis Storey cancelled out 10 minutes later. Alex Steadman then put struggling Sports 2-1 up on the half-hour mark.

That looked like being enough for three valuable points – until Vill Powell popped up with an equaliser with less than four minutes remaining.
