EVO-STIK League

Four teams made it two wins from their opening two matches of the new EVO-STIK League First Division South season, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leek Town, Loughborough Dynamo, relegated Stafford Rangers and newly-promoted Tividale all won on Tuesday night.

Leek won 2-1 at a Market Drayton Town side yet to pick up a point.

Dan Shelley gave the Blues a 36th minute lead that Tim Grice doubled in the 65th minute, and although Paul McMullen replied, it didn`t arrive until two minutes from time.

Dynamo edged out Carlton Town – also yet to pick up a point – by the odd goal in five at home.

Steve Towers gave the hosts the lead on the half-hour mark, only for Alex Troke to level within five minutes. Aaron Hooton then put the Nottinghamshire side in front just before the break. But Mason Holwell on 63 minutes and then Bradley Munn – ironically signed from Carlton in pre-season - five minutes from time, won it for Tommy Brookbanks` side.

Stafford edged out newly-promoted neighbours Norton United, who won their opening NPL game, with a goal from Ryan Edmunds just shy of the hour-mark in front of a crowd of 483.

Tividale, Midland Alliance champions, followed up last Saturday`s 3-1 win over Lincoln United with a fine 3-0 home success against fancied Coalville Town.

It looked as though the Ravens were going to get at least a point out of the game as it moved into its final six minutes when Leigh Downing converted a penalty to give the home side the lead and that was swiftly followed by a brace from Matt Jukes.

Tuesday saw first wins for Goole AFC, Newcastle Town, Stocksbridge Park Steels and newly-promoted Spalding United, who enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields against a Brigg Town side yet to pick up a point.

Jamie Thurlbourne gave the Tulips a 20th minute lead. But it wasn't until the final quarter that they pulled away after a Michael Duggan own goal had earned the Zebras parity in the 65th minute. Kern Miller, Tom Waumsley and Mitch Griffiths took the game away from the visitors.

Goole inflicted a first defeat on Mick Wadsworth`s Sheffield FC, winning 3-1 at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds with goals from Andy Gascoigne after 23 minutes, Tyler Williams just before the break and James Cottingham 11 minutes from time, shortly before Ashley Longstaff pulled one back for Club.

Newcastle beat neighbours Kidsgrove Athletic 3-1 at the Lyme Valley Stadium with a brace from Tim Sanders in the ninth and 50th minutes and then Neville Thompson on the hour-mark – Jack Woolley replying on 69 minutes.

Stocksbridge made it two defeats on the trot for Lincoln United after a 2-0 Bracken Moor win, courtesy of Nathan Joynes after 10 minutes and Will Senior three minutes later.

Two other games were drawn, with Gresley FC and Sutton Coldfield Town sharing a goalless encounter at The Moat and Rainworth Miners Welfare picking up their first point after a 2-2 draw at home to Mickleover Sports, who led in the opening minute from Nic De Girolamo.

Matt Jones levelled seven minutes later, only for Karl Ashton to restore the visitors' lead three minutes later. Craig Mitchell equalised in the 27th minute for the Wrens and the defences tightened up after that.
