Tuesday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Coalville Town missed the opportunity to put some pressure on EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South leaders Stafford Rangers on Tuesday night when they were held to a 2-2 draw at Market Drayton Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Rangers suffered a wobble last Saturday when they lost at home to Shaw Lane Aquaforce but they still have a healthy seven-point lead over the Ravens who still, however, have another three games in hand.

This was one of their games in hand and they led through Josh Raven`s 17th minute effort. But Jeff Watkins equalised on 65 minutes and the sides then swapped stoppage time goals – Luke Smithson for the visitors and Cohen Bramall for Drayton.

Leek Town`s unbeaten run of five games came to an end when they lost 2-1 to a now third-placed Basford United on a freezing cold evening in Nottingham.

Eugen Bopp gave Basford a seventh minute lead with a shot from the edge of the box and Stuart Hendrie doubled the lead in the 26th minute with a neat turn and shot.

It was a different story in the second half as Leek put Basford under pressure with Saul Deeney making a number of saves. Basford held out until the 91st minute when substitute Theo Stair pulled one back for Leek.

Lincoln United got their play-off challenge back on track with a 3-1 Ashby Avenue success against second-bottom Loughborough Dynamo.

Jack McGovern`s 29th minute penalty was all that separated the teams at the break. Matt Cotton then added a second for United seven minutes into the second period, only for Mark Shelton to immediately reduce the arrears. But a second from McGovern on 65 minutes sealed United`s win to lift them to within three points of fifth-placed Leek.

Missed chances and a couple of giveaway goals resulted in Spalding United missing out on more vital points at The Moat against Gresley FC.

On a very heavy playing surface, an under-hit backpass fell short of Tulips` keeper Michael Duggan and presented Gresley`s Jordan Ball with the lead on 39 minutes. And 18 minutes from time, Moatmen boss Gary Ricketts made sure the points stayed in Derbyshire with a second goal.

Third-bottom and new-look Goole AFC earned a crucial 2-1 win at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels to move five points clear of the drop zone.

Aaron Moxam proved to be the Vikings` hero, bagging a brace in the 61st and 87th minutes – Scott Ruthven replying in stoppage time for Steels.
