Tuesday's First Division South review

By David Watters

Tuesday night's matches in the EVO-STIK League South were notable for the first defeats of the season to date suffered by newcomers Peterborough Sports and Alvechurch, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Sports became the fifth successive victims for fellow promotees Cleethorpes Town, who ran out 4-1 winners, to end their run of 49 home league games without defeat!

It was even at half-time after goals from Andy Taylor for the visitors after 20 minutes and Lewis Webb for the hosts on 36 minutes. But a second half hat-trick by Marc Cooper in the 63rd, 81st and 83rd minutes maintained Clee`s 100 per cent record.

Basford United`s experienced striker Liam Hearn bagged a brace in the 21st and 29th minutes to condemn Alvechurch to their first defeat of the new season.

Tom Turton did give Church hope with a penalty reply on the hour-mark but Basford held firm.

An early third minute Jonathan Kapend penalty for the hosts was all that separated Newcastle Town and Carlton Town at the Lyme Valley Stadium, while Frickley Athletic hit the goal trail at Westfield Lane against Belper Town.

There was only a 36th minute Jacob Hazel goal for the home side in the opening 45 minutes but less than a minute into the second, Kieran O`Connell equalised.

Teddy Bloor eventually put Frickley in front again 15 minutes from time, and then Carl Stewart, Bloor again and Jason Yates, scored in the final 10 minutes to make it a nap hand for the hosts.

Elsewhere, Luke Rowe pounced eight minutes from time to earn Bedworth United a 3-2 Oval win over Romulus.

Romario Martin had given the yet-to-win Roms a fifth minute lead that Elliot Parrott after 15 minutes and Iyseden Christie 20 minutes later, turned round. Jordan Francis levelled on 69 minutes, but Rowe grabbed the Greenbacks later winner.
