Tuesday's North Division action review

By David Watters

There were only a handful of games in the EVO-STIK League North on Tuesday night but there was a big one between leaders South Shields and third-placed Hyde United on the 3G at Ewen Fields, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And it produced a terrific spectacle between two very good sides, played out in-front of an excellent crowd of 739.

The visitors opened the scoring after just a couple of minutes when Richard Juul picked up the ball before cutting inside and curling a left-footed drive into the far corner of the net.

Hyde responded immediately and were level within four minutes when Tyrone Gay found himself unmarked 12 yards out from a corner and his powerful header was well saved by the Shields `keeper Liam Connell but prodded home by poacher Max Leonard from three yards.

The second half was better than the first in terms of an attacking spectacle and the best chance of the half fell to Hyde's Dominic Marie.

Following a Tom Pratt interception in the centre circle and a driving run, his pass to Marie was slightly over-hit, allowing the keeper to clear when it looked like Hyde were going to get the winner with five minutes left to play.

Those dropped points allowed Scarborough Athletic to move into second place, two points behind Shields and one above Hyde, after winning 3-1 at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium against Ramsbottom United.

Boro couldn't have wished for a better start as James Walshaw put them in front inside the opening minute. And it got even better for the visitors just four minutes later as Michael Coulson made it 2-0.

The game settled down after that, and it wasn't until the 72nd minute that the next goal arrived – and it was from Scarborough's Sam Hewitt to seal the points, rendering Greg Daniels' 83rd minute reply as just a consolation for Rammy.

Colne moved to within three points of sixth-placed Trafford but are still down in 11th spot after beating Kendal Town 2-1 at Parkside.

First half goals from Alex Curran after 25 minutes and Ollie Crankshaw after 37 minutes gave the visitors the advantage. Steve Yewson responded on 63 minutes but the Mintcakes were unable to find a leveller.

Colne moved above Glossop North End on goal difference after the Hillmen were beaten by the same scoreline at Ingfield by Ossett Town.

A Nicky Boshell own goal a minute before half-time gave the hosts a boost and, despite Bradley Roscoe equalising nine minutes after the break, Courtney Meppen-Walter won it for Town just past the hour-mark.

Tuesday's other game saw bottom side Goole AFC lose 2-0 at Stainton Park to Radcliffe, goals from Kingsley Williams after 28 minutes and James Hooper 14 minutes from time winning the match for Boro.
