Tuesday's North Division action review

By David Watters

The EVO-STIK League North title race took another twist on Tuesday night as Bamber Bridge edged out second-placed South Shields 3-2 at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium to move into fourth spot, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

It looked a tall order for Brig after Shields took the lead after 24 minutes through Jon Shaw. But two quickfire goals around the half-hour mark from Adam Dodd and Adam Roscoe sent the home side in ahead at the break.

The visitors were level seven minutes after the restart as Robbie Briggs made it 2-2 from the penalty spot but a late 81st minute goal from Kieran Charnock ensured Brig ran out winners in a thrilling game and great advert for the division.

Scarborough Athletic moved to within two points of Shields and four of leaders Hyde United with a game in hand after winning 3-1 at Seel Park against Mossley AFC.

Nathan Valentine had Boro in front by the 15th minute and James Walshaw doubled that in the 38th minute. Walshaw's second just after the hour-mark killed the game off as a contest, although the Lilywhites did manage an 89th minute penalty consolation from Tom Dean.

Prescot Cables remain in fifth, two points behind Bamber Bridge, after damaging Tadcaster Albion's own play-off hopes with a 2-1 Valerie Park win.

Another cracking game saw Taddy lead through Billy Whitehouse's 18th minute goal right until the 89th minute when James Edgar equalised. And in stoppage time, Lloyd Dean popped up with Cables` winner.

Clitheroe and Trafford, lying seventh and sixth respectively at kick-off, remained in those positions after sharing a 1-1 draw at Shawbridge.

Jack Egan's 19th minute opener for the Blues was cancelled out by Trafford`s Darius Palma nine minutes into the second half.

Colwyn Bay also suffered a blow to their play-off hopes when they lost 4-0 at Colne, who are now level on points with the North Wales side, who possess a game in hand.

Goals in either half from Alex Curran and Harry Pratt and Ollie Crankshaw and Curran again sealed Colne`s win.

Two sides just below the top six race, Glossop North End and Droylsden, both probably needed a win to stay in contention, so a 1-1 draw really suited neither.
