The win means that the Mariners are guaranteed to finish in the top three and will now look to take the title as they hold a five-point lead over second-placed Scarborough Athletic, who also won on Tuesday, and eight over stumbling Hyde United, both of whom have only three games to go compared to Shields` four.
In front of another terrific crowd of 1,437, Carl Finnigan soon had the majority of them celebrating with a goal inside the opening minute. Gavin Cogdon threatened a landslide when he doubled the Mariners` lead with only eight minutes gone on the clock. And 20 minutes later, the same player made it 3-0, but the combination of Glossop rolling up their sleeves and Shields taking their foot off the gas meant that was the final score.
Scarborough ensured Colwyn Bay face a battle to avoid another season in the North after beating them 2-1 at Llanelian Road to leave the home side five points adrift of sixth-placed Trafford with four games remaining.
It started well for the North Wales side when Lassana Nalatche Mendes put them in front after just three minutes. And it wasn`t until 16 minutes from time that Michael Coulson grabbed Boro`s equaliser. But the winner came just four minutes later from Jorome Slew.
Prescot Cables are fourth after leap-frogging the team who began the evening above them, Bamber Bridge, at Valerie Park.
Chris Almond gave Cables a 16th minute lead in front of 325. But Adam Dodd eventually pulled Brig back on terms just past the hour-mark. Josh Klein-Davies popped up with Cables` winner in stoppage time.
Tadcaster Albion`s top six hopes disappeared when they could only draw at Ossett Albion.
Taddy needed to beat their Yorkshire rivals to maintain their outside hopes of making the play-offs and when Scott Metcalfe broke the deadlock to give them a 72nd minute lead, it looked good for the visitors. But Casey Stewart equalised five minutes later and then Aiden Chippendale gave Ossett the lead with six minutes to go, only for a Stewart own goal to grab a last-gasp point for Taddy.
Michael Fish's 22nd minute effort won the derby for Mossley AFC at Stainton Park against Radcliffe FC, while Ramsbottom United won the evening's other game 3-1 at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium against Kendal Town, thanks to goals from Tommy Brooks, Jon Robinson and Phil Dean, with Gary Basterfield replying.
