Tuesday's North Division action review

By David Watters

South Shields secured the EVO-STIK League North title on Tuesday night to make it a third successive title win, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Shields won 4-0 at Radcliffe`s Stainton Park to claim the title with two games to spare.

Gavin Cogden put Shields in front after 23 minutes and then Michael Richardson added a second just shy of the hour-mark. A Graeme Armstrong brace in the final four minutes sealed a comfortable win for the visitors.

In front of 961 at the Flamingo Land Stadium, Michael Coulson put second-placed Scarborough Athletic in front after 27 minutes against Glossop North End.

But it wasn`t until the 78th minute that James Walshaw managed to double the hosts` advantage, with Courtnet Meppen-Walter making it a nervy end with an 88th minute reply for the Hillmen.

Boro need a point, or third-placed Hyde United to drop points, on Saturday to go up automatically.

Bamber Bridge and Prescot Cables will battle it out for fourth and fifth-place on Saturday after Brig`s 3-1 win at second-bottom Skelmersdale United took them a point above Cables.

Danny Forbes gave the visitors a 12th minute lead that James Boyde doubled on 33 minutes. Three minutes later, Scott Bakkor reduced the deficit, only for Ali Waddecar to make it 3-1 just before half-time.

Colwyn Bay have two more games left to chase the sixth and final play off place, but could have done without a 3-1 defeat at the Butcher`s Arms against Droylsden.

Droylsden took the lead a minute before half-time through Liam Caddick. Jack Hindle equalised after 69 minutes, only for Levi Phillips to restore the Bloods` lead a minute later. Sefton Gonzales thenkilled the game off in stoppage time with Droylsden`s third.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Colne`s Harry Pratt scored the only goal on the half-hour mark at home to Ossett Albion, while Casey Stewart bagged a brace as Tadcaster Albion won 2-0 in the Yorkshire derby at Ingfield against Ossett Town, who are shortly to merge with their town rivals.

The win gives Taddy a mathematical chance of sneaking into the top six but it would need results elsewhere to really go their way.
