Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Buxton moved to the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division table after they beat Workington AFC 2-1 at Silverlands on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

An own goal from former Carlisle United defender Matt Douglas gave the home side a 13th minute lead. Four minutes before the break, Bradley Grayson doubled the Bucks lead from the penalty spot.

Scott Allison reduced the arrears nine minutes from time but the visitors were unable to find a leveller and Barwell held on for their third win from four matches.

Marine AFC, who drew with Hednesford Town on Monday night, were joined by Ashton United, Whitby Town and Stafford Rangers, who have only played twice thus far, in being unbeaten to date.

Ashton shared a 3-3 thriller at Croft Park with Blyth Spartans in front of a crowd of 562.

The visitors led through Gary Gee after seven minutes but Blyth equalised through Daniel Maguire on the half-hour mark. Jack Dorney restored Ashton`s lead on 40 minutes but a penalty from Stephen Turnbull two minutes later sent the sides into the break all-square.

Spartans finally went ahead through Sean Reid with 20 minutes to go but former Darlington striker Lee Gaskell charged down Peter Jeffries’ clearance in the 82nd minute and the ball fell kindly for him to slot home.

Whitby secured a 1-0 win at Cantilever Park against newly-promoted Warrington Town, Dale Hopson scoring the only goal after 63 minutes to win it for the Seasiders.

In contrast, Skelmersdale United, Frickley Athletic and Sutton Coldfield Town are all still looking for a first win of 2016-17 after Tuesday`s results.

Skelmersdale and newly-promoted Coalville Town had to wait more than an hour to finish their clash following a serious player injury.

Coalville midfielder Alex Troke spent the night at Liverpool's Fackerley Hospital after he was badly hurt with two minutes to go and his side leading 2-1 at Stormy Corny. Medics refused to move the former Carlton Town player before the arrival of doctor to check his condition after he was involved in an accidental clash of heads with Skem `keeper Martin Fearon.

The sides finally kicked-off just before 10.45pm to finish the game after Troke had left for hospital in an ambulance with a suspected neck injury and concussion.

Earlier, Kenny Strickland had given the home side a 35th minute lead that Nathan Watson cancelled out within three minutes. And Watson`s second five minutes into the second half eventually proved to be the winner – albeit some hour and a half later.

Stourbridge broke their duck for the new season by inflicting a fourth successive defeat on hosts Frickley at Westfield Lane.

Luke Benbow opened the scoring on 10 minutes, converting Chris Lait's low cross with the assistant referee indicating that the ball had crossed the line, `Geoff Hurst style`, in spite of Frickley keeper Seb Malkowski's efforts to claw the ball away. And the striker, who returned to Amblecote in the summer from Rushall Olympic, doubled his tally on 21 minutes as he turned and shot home from just outside the area after being teed up by Drew Canavan.

Sutton Coldfield went down to a 3-1 defeat at Causeway Lane to a Matlock Town side for whom this was a first win after recording two draws and a loss in their opening three games.

But the Gladiators had to come back from being a 10th minute Luke Rodgers goal down to win. Marc Newsham eventually equalised on 66 minutes and four minutes later, recent signing from Ilkeston FC, Michael Williams, gave them the lead. Marcus Dinanga made sure with a third 13 minutes from time.

Halesowen Town earned their first win of the new season, 2-1 at the Weaver Stadium against Nantwich Town.

It was goalless at the break but Malcolm Melvin broke the deadlock to give the Yeltz a 58th minute lead. Sean Cooke equalised from the spot seven minutes later but Kaiman Anderson ensured Halesowen moved off one point with a second 15 minutes from time.

Rushall Olympic doubled their win tally after beating Grantham Town 3-1 at Dales Lane.

The Pics opened the scoring five minutes before the break through Zak Martin. Alex Reid doubled their lead 13 minutes after the break and it was Martin again who made it 3-0 and game over after 64 minutes. Luke Shaw reduced the deficit with a 25-yard strike on 71 minutes.

Barwell also made it two wins to date after beating Mickleover Sports 2-1 at Kirkby Road.

Tyrell Shannon-Lewis gave Barwell the boost of an early third minute lead. Blair Anderson added a second for the home side on 38 minutes, only for Brodie Litchfield to pull Sports back into the game from the penalty spot right on the stroke of half-time. But the hosts managed to hold on to move onto seven points from their four games.
