Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans bounced back from defeat at Sutton Coldfield Town to maintain their ten point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier's top flight by beating Frickley Athletic 5-1 on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 587 at Croft Park, Luke Armstrong gave the home side the boost of a first-minute goal to get the hammering underway. Armstrong added his and Blyth`s second after 23 minutes, only for Waide Fairhurst to pull the Blues back into the game in the 43rd minute.

Frickley were reduced to ten-men with the sending-off of Nathan Valentine for a last-man challenge but keeper Sebastian Malkowski saved Robbie Dale's penalty to keep the scoreline to 2-1.

Dale did make amends from open play just before the hour-mark to make it 3-1 and Sean Reid added a fourth on 62 minutes, with Matty Pattison making it a nap hand in stoppage time.

Stourbridge remain in second place after Luke Benbow’s early goal was enough to settle a tight local derby against Halesowen Town at the Grove.

Benbow headed home at the far post from Tom Tonks’s corner after just eight minutes to the delight of the Glassboys contingent in a fantastic midweek crowd of 2,127. Ethan Jones came close to adding to the lead but it was a different story after the break as the Yeltz piled on the pressure with former Glassboy Lee Chilton hitting the bar from close range.

Nantwich Town are third, two points behind the Glassboys, after edging out bottom-markers Skelmersdale United by the odd goal in five at Stormy Corner.

Ryan Brooke gave the Dabbers a 27th minute lead that Phil Mooney cancelled out 10 minutes before half-time. Just three minutes after the restart, the visitors restored their lead through Steve Jones. Callum Grogan pulled the strugglers back on level terms after 72 minutes but they had parity for less than two minutes as Sean Cooke`s penalty proved to be the Nantwich winner.

There was a shock for fourth-placed Buxton, however, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Silverlands to mid-table Ashton United.

Ryan Crowther gave Ashton a 13th minute lead that loanee Jack Dyche eventually doubled five minutes into the second half. And that proved to be the winner, despite the Bucks pulling one back through new permanent signing Liam Hardy after 67 minutes.

Warrington Town and Whitby Town remain in fifth and sixth respectively after both won at home.

The Wire were 1-0 Cantilever Park winners over Mickleover Sports, courtesy of a 64th minute goal from Ruben Jerome, while the Seasiders saw off fellow play-off hopefuls Spennymoor Town 2-1 at the Turnbull Ground.

Dale Hopson`s 61st minute penalty broke the deadlock in Whitby`s favour, only for James Curtis to level after 73 minutes. Michael Roberts popped up with Whitby`s winner in stoppage time.

Workington AFC are just a point off fifth place after Sam Joel`s 55th minute goal proved to be enough for all three points at the Marine Travel Arena against the struggling Mariners.

Fourth-bottom Corby Town are just a point behind Marine now after they held Rushall Olympic to a goalless draw at Dales Lane, while third-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town followed up last weekend`s win against the leaders with a point from another 0-0 draw against Stafford Rangers in front of a crowd of 440 at Marston Road.
