Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans all-but clinched the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division title on Tuesday night after they won for the twenty-eighth time this season, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Alun Armstrong`s side scrapped for a 1-0 win at Dales Lane against mid-table Rushall Olympic with an early seventh minute Daniel Maguire goal. And while second-placed Spennymoor Town can still overhaul their north-east rivals, Blyth could still clinch promotion on Saturday when Halesowen Town are the visitors to Croft Park.

An early seventh minute Daniel Maguire goal eventually proved enough for Spartans.

Spennymoor severely damaged Matlock Town`s own top five hopes with a comprehensive 4-0 win at the DCJ Group Insurance Arena.

A crowd of 331 saw Graeme Armstrong give the visitors a 16th minute lead that Andy Johnson doubled seven minutes later. And When Glen Taylor made it 3-0 with only 26 minutes gone on the clock, things didn`t look good for the Gladiators. But they managed to stem the flow and only conceded once more when Armstrong netted his second just shy of the hour-mark.

Buxton moved into fifth spot after they beat troubled Ilkeston FC 2-0 at Silverlands.

The Robins looked doomed to the drop, but at least they managed to get a side out on Tuesday after they pulled out of last weekend`s game at Workington AFC.

And they held the Bucks until he 63rd minute when Bradley Grayson opened the scoring. And victory was confirmed in stoppage time when Niall Doran added a second.

Workington are back in the top five race, albeit perhaps as outsiders, after winning 2-1 at Hurst Cross against Ashton United.

The Reds got off to a great start when Josh Calvert gave them a third minute lead. But less than three minutes later, Matty Chadwick equalised. And it remained all-square until 15 minutes from time when Sam Smith popped up with Workington`s winner.

At the other end of the table, Mickleover Sports gained a vital 3-1 home win over fourth-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town to move eight points clear of the Royals.

Connor Hall gave Sports a ninth minute lead that Lewis Belgrave doubled in the 33rd minute. Nathan Kelly eventually reduced the deficit 16 minutes from time, only for Tyler Blake to add a third and killer goal for Mickleover nine minutes later.
