Veteran striker to lead young guns

Veteran striker Vill Powell could be one of five new faces in Ossett Town's young line-up on Saturday when they run out at New Mills in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League.

After Saturday's postponed First Divsision North clash with Prescot Cables, their second in a row, manager John Reed and his new assistant manager Dave Merris used the opportunity to announce the addition of Powell, Darol Lucas, Mike Brewster, Brad Kerr, and Liam Nelthorpe to their squad at The 4G Voice & Data Stadium.

Lucas arrived from neighbours Ossett Albion while midfielder Brewster has joined on a long-term loan deal from Premier Division FC United of Manchester.

Merris was instrumental in bringing in striker Brad Kerr from Worsborough Bridge, where he has 14 goals to his name, and Nelthorpe from Retford United where he was captain.

Powell, 35, makes the move from Handsworth Parramore to add experience to Reed’s squad, one of, if not the youngest, in the league with nine or ten regulars on the team sheet under the age of 20.

A club spokesman said: "Reed believes the experience Powell brings will be a huge help to the squad. Reed and Merris will look to further strengthen the squad in the coming weeks should the right players become available."

* The Ingfielders have cut the turnstile prices for their Boxing Day derby with Ossett Albion at The 4G Voice & Data Stadium as a Christmas present to the supporters of both the town's clubs with admission priced at £5 for adults, £2.50 for concessions and £1 for under 16s.
