Evo-Stik NPL First Division North

The only game in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's First Division North on Wednesday night saw Darlington 1883 move into second place on goal difference after a comfortable 3-1 win against mid-table Cammell Laird, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

A bumper crowd of 879 at Heritage Park saw the home team have an early scare when Lairds` defender Liam Hollett had a free header in the box that crashed off the bar and out to safety.

But Darlo recovered their composure and went ahead after 14 minutes when Steven Thompson ran towards goal unchallenged and his shot flew into the bottom corner past Mike Langley.

Dowson doubled the lead 10 minutes into the second period when he finished fine passing move and victory was sealed in the 79th minute when Nathan Fisher was brought down in the box and Terry Galbraith made it 3-0 from the resulting penalty.

Lairds managed a consolation in the final minute when some indifferent defending saw Paul Foy run from the half way line and shoot home from 15 yards.
