Wednesday's First South action review

By David Watters

Newcastle Town missed the opportunity to move into second spot in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South on Wednesday night when they suffered a 1-0 defeat at neighbours Kidsgrove Athletic, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Castle though will be ruing the fourth minute penalty miss by Dan Cocks at The Novus Stadium after which Grove had the majority of the play. In the end, it came as little surprise when former Port Vale favourite Chris Birchall headed in Lee Pickerill`s cross to give them a 20th minute lead.

It was nip and tuck after that but the home side held firm, despite having player-manager Ryan Austin sent-off late on for a last-man foul.
