The only game in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's Premier Division on Wednesday night saw Worksop Town move into second spot, two points behind leaders Chorley, after a 3-1 win against mid-table Nantwich Town at Sandy Lane, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.
This was the Tigers` fifth successive victory – a run that has pushed them into serious title contenders. And a decent crowd of 421 saw an entertaining encounter in which the home side had to come back from being a goal down to win.
Despite the Tigers dominating the early play, the Dabbers took a 19th minute lead when Aaron Burns netted from an angle after home `keeper Jonathan Stewart had saved Alex Meaney`s initial effort.
Danny Johnson`s side held their lead for 10 minutes before the league`s leading scorer, Leon Mettam, got on the end of a mix-up at the back to equalise. And just three minutes later, a rampant Tigers side took the lead in rather unfortunate circumstances for visiting custodian Steve James when Conor Higginson`s corner went straight in.
The points were virtually made safe three minutes after half-time when Mettam scored his second of the game – and 40th of the season to date - with 12 coming from the penalty spot.
