West Round-up: Colls go top

By James Gordon

Atherton Collieries moved to the top of the Evo-Stik League West Division table on Saturday after they won 1-0 at Leek Town and overnight leaders Runcorn Linnets suffered defeat at Market Drayton Town.

In front of a crowd of 336 at Harrison Park, Tom Bentham was given too much time and space to beat Leek 'keeper Danny Roberts after just 4 minutes and score what proved to be Colls' winner.

Linnets were surprised at the Greenfields Sports Ground as Market Drayton came back from a 6th minute Kristian Holt effort down to win 3-2 with a late goal.

Danny Beddows equalised after 20 minutes only for Kurt Sherlock to restore the visitors' lead 8 minutes later.

Will Wells equalised just before the break and Drayton won it with an Andy Hartlebury goal 8 minutes from time.

Trafford are third, two points behind Runcorn, but dropped a couple of home points after being held to a 1-1 draw at Shawe View by mid-table Widnes.

The deadlock was broken on the hour-mark when Ross Davidson put the home side in front.

But 9 minutes from the end, George Webster pulled the visitors back on terms to earn a draw.

A terrific crowd of 550 attended Seel Park for Mossley AFC's game with Kidsgrove Athletic on Community Day.

However, the teams locked in eighth and ninth-place respectively couldn't reward the fans with a goal in a tight 0-0 draw.

Skelmersdale United remain bottom of the pile after losing for the tenth time in fifteen games.

Skem went down 2-1 at Shawbridge to Clitheroe, coming back from an early 6th minute Oliver Van Veen goal down to win with a Max Hazeldine brace in the 16th and - heartbreakingly for Skem - 90th minutes.

Colwyn Bay moved up to tenth after a 2-1 win at the Butcher's Arms against Droyslden.

Blake Robinson put the Welsh side ahead after 38 minutes and added a second 5 minutes later through Tom McCready.

The Bloods 'won' the second half with am 86th minute Sefton Gonzales effort, but they weren't able to find a leveller.

Two of the bottom four, Chasetown and Glossop North End, shared a 2-2 draw at The Scholars.

Matt Gardner gave the hosts the lead on the half-hour mark and when George Cater doubled that in the 66th minute, things looked bleak for the Hillmen.

But a Matt Russell brace in 2 minutes during the final 10 minutes of normal time – the second from the spot – earned the visitors a share of the spoils.
