West Round-up: Five star Linnets close the gap

By James Gordon

Runcorn Linnets closed the gap at the top of the EVO-STIK League West Division to four points as they plundered five past struggling Clitheroe.

The damage was done in the first half as they led 4-0 at the break, goals coming from Liam O’Neill, Kurt Sherlock, Paul Shanley and Mitchell Bryant, before Bryant added his second just two minutes in to the second half.

Leaders Atherton Collieries were held to a draw for only the second time this season, 0-0 at Droylsden, ending their six game winning sequence.

Radcliffe remain third, despite losing for the fourth time in their last six games, going down 2-1 at Market Drayton Town.

Andrew Hartlebury put the hosts in front, but Tunde Owolabi looked to have rescued a point for Boro before James Jennings popped up six minutes from time.

That enabled Mossley to move level on points with Radcliffe as they beat Skelmersdale United 1-0 thanks to Raul Correia’s first goal for the club since joining from Radcliffe.

Mossley leapfrog Leek Town in the table after they were held 0-0 at home to Colne, who remain six points behind them in the table.

Prescot Cables were able to close the gap on the play-off places as they came from behind to beat Kidsgrove Athletic 2-1.

The visitors lead through Kyle Diskin going in to the last 15 minutes, but Cables won it thanks to Josh Klein-Davies and Lloyd Dean.

Ramsbottom United are also in the hunt for the play-offs and they won 1-0 over Colwyn Bay, Jamie Rainford’s eighth goal for the club coming with just three minutes to play.

At the bottom, Glossop North End recorded a crucial victory at Kendal Town, winning 3-1 against their nearest rivals.

The Mintcakes had boosted their survival hopes with a win last week, but they disappeared without trace in this one and trailed 3-0 after just 33 minutes.

Jack Tuohy, Matthew Russell and Kane Hickman scored the goals for Glossop as they recorded only their fourth win all season.

Chasetown moved away from the bottom group with a 3-1 win at home to Widnes, who are now five points behind the top 10.

George Lomax had fired Widnes in to the lead after 21 minutes, but Chasetown turned it around before the break through James Askey and William Whieldon, before Thomas Hill added gloss in second half injury time.

Trafford suffered their third defeat in five as they went down 2-0 at home to Newcastle Town.

Rod Orlando-Young’s penalty and Jordan Cole’s strike moves Newcastle level on points with Droylsden in mid-table.
