West Round-up: Goals aplenty as Radcliffe go top

By James Gordon

Radcliffe took advantage of a weekend off for Runcorn Linnets to go top of the EVO-STIK League West Division.

Ben Wharton scored twice in the first six minutes to help Radcliffe on their way to a 4-0 win at home to Newcastle Town, Sam Billington and Louis Myers scoring the other goals.

Atherton Collieries also took advantage of Linnets being out of action to jump in to second place, beating Kidsgrove 2-1.

Thomas Bentham and Connor Gaul put them in control before Lee Williamson pulled one back on 63 minutes, but Colls held out.

There was a remarkable match at Greenfields as Market Drayton and Prescot Cables shared eight goals in a 4-4 thriller.

Cables led early through Jack Lenehan and they were 3-2 up at the break.

Michael Monaghan thought he had won it with his second on 75 minutes to put them 4-3 up, before Charles Knowles second gave the hosts a point.

Also in the goals were Trafford, who ended a run of four without a win to hammer basement boys Skelmersdale United 6-1.

Matthew Bryan and Dec Rydings put them 2-0 up at the break, and further goals came in the second half through Lewis Nightingale (penalty), Bryan again, Curtis Jones and Aaron Burns, before Alex Griffiths’ late consolation provided a blot on the Trafford copybook for the afternoon.

Two play-off chasers met at Riverside Stadium, ad it was a result that saw both slip out of the top five, as Ramsbottom United were held 1-1 by Leek Town.

Jamie Rother gave the Rams a 16th minute advantage, but Aaron Bott’s penalty earned a point for Leek, who stretch their unbeaten run to seven games.

The beneficiaries of that result were Mossley, who climbed up to fifth place with a 1-0 win at Kendal Town thanks to Michael Fish’s first half strike.

There was an early kick off at Colwyn Bay, as Clitheroe came from behind to draw 1-1, while Chasetown registered only their fourth win of the season, beating Droylsden 1-0 thanks to William Whieldon’s first half goal.
