At Holt House, a tight affair was anticipated between Colne and leaders Runcorn Linnets.
But instead – and appropriately on the day – Linnets blew the Lancastrians away to win 6-1!
Kris Holt after 6 minutes, Freddie Potter on 25 minutes and a Dan O'Brien penalty on the half-hour mark put the visitors firmly in command.
And although Alex Curran reduced the deficit just before half-time, Connor McCarthy after 53 minutes, a second O'Brien spot-kick 8 minutes from time and a sixth from Paul Shanley in stoppage time completed the rout to lift Linnets four points clear at the top.
Six-goal away wins aren't that common, but we had two in three games on Saturday as Dale Korie-Butler struck a hat-trick to help Widnes recover from two deficits and maintain their current run of form with a 6-3 victory over Glossop North End.
Matt Russell handed the home side a 13th minute lead, which was cancelled out by Korie-Butler as the half-hour approached, before adding his second 10 minutes later after Peter Boyle had restored Glossop’s one-goal advantage.
Korie-Butler edged Widnes in front for the first time 2 minutes into the second half to complete his hat-trick, then Jack Dunn on 66 minutes and Phil Doran on 83 minutes got themselves on the scoresheet as the Whites racked up five at Surrey Street.
Russell grabbed a personal second a minute from time as he converted a late penalty, but it was purely consolation for the Hillmen as sub Ben Hodkinson netted a sixth in stoppage time.
The other game saw a slightly less adventurous 1-1 draw at the Greenfields Sports Ground between Market Drayton Town and third-placed Mossley AFC.
The Lilywhites though looked to be heading for three points as they led through Andy Keogh's 67th minute effort.
But 2 minutes into time added on at the end of the contest, Josh Bradburn netted Drayton's leveller from close range.
