West Round-up: Magnificent seven for Radcliffe

By James Gordon

The pressure of Radcliffe’s relentless run has finally told as they leapfrogged Runcorn Linnets to the top of the EVO-STIK League West Division table.

Their seventh straight win was on the cards as early as eight minutes at home to Widnes, when they led 2-0 thanks to Tunde Owolabi and Matthew Crothers.

Although Joe Herbert marked his Widnes debut with a goal on the half hour, Ben Wharton’s penalty made the points and ensured they capitalised on a surprise Linnets trip up.

The Linnets were humbled 4-0 at home by Droylsden, with Liam Caddick scoring a hat-trick inside the first 31 minutes, and Domaine Rouse adding a late fourth.

Runcorn have slipped to third courtesy of Atherton Collieries 2-1 win at home to Glossop North End.

Colls did their work early too, scoring twice in three minutes through Ben Hardcastle and Ian Rowlands within the first quarter of an hour, and Moussa Samassa’s consolation was just that for Glossop.

Clitheroe’s dismal form continued as they suffered a sixth straight loss in going down 3-0 at Kidsgrove Athletic.

Anthony Malbon, Adam Freeland and Kyle Diskin scored the goals in only Grove’s second home win in the league this season.

Bottom side Skelmersdale United claimed the unwanted record of being the first team to concede a half century of goals this season as they were thumped 6-0 at Leek Town.

It was goalless for 42 minutes before Jordan Johnson gave Leek a slender lead at the break.

But they cut loose in the second half, Marc Grocott and Rob Stevenson both scoring before the hour, and then Aaron Bott (2) and Stevenson again scoring in the final quarter.

The win lifts Leek in to the play-off places, which now has just one point separateing them in fifth and Colne in ninth.

In that group are Ramsbottom United, who celebrated their progress in the FA Trophy with a 3-1 win at Market Drayton Town, all their goals coming in the first half.

Those results meant Trafford dropping to seventh place, as they lost 2-0 to play-off rivals Prescot Cables.

Goals from Michael Monaghan and Chris Almond were enough for Cables.

Colne sit ninth after they fought from 2-0 down to rescue a point at home to Newcastle Town.

The visitors led at half time through Chris Smith and Matthew Ward, but Alex Curran’s brace earned Colne a point.

Kendal Town couldn’t turn a half-time lead in to victory as they lost 3-1 at home to Colwyn Bay.

Scott Harries had them a goal to the good, but Lassana Mendes, Ethan Devine and Daniel Andrews earned the Welsh side only their second win in five.

Elsewhere, Mossley recovered from conceding a fourth minute goal against Chasetown to win 3-1.

Max Leonard, Ben Halfacre and Michael Fish cancelled out Thomas Hill’s opener.
