Worksop record winning run continues

Worksop Town’s unbroken 19-match winning run in the Northern Premier League is believed to be a new record.

The Tigers sit top of the NPL East Division, having won 19 of their 21 games so far, and are currently 14 points clear of nearest rivals Stockton Town, who beat them on the opening day of the season.

After following that loss with a 2-2 draw at Bridlington, Worksop have gone on to win all 19 league games, scoring 59 goals in the process and conceding just eight.

Six is the highest number of goals they’ve managed in a single league match this season, which they have managed twice against Lincoln United (6-0, home) and Hebburn Town (6-1, away), while they have hit four or more on six other occasions.

They have kept 12 clean sheets, the latest coming in a 2-0 win at home to Grantham Town on Monday.

That game also saw their biggest attendance of the season, with 939 beating the 848 set against Stockton Town the week before Christmas when their artificial pitch at Sandy Lane meant they were one of the few fixtures to go ahead as the weather decimated the schedule.

Striker Liam Hughes, who joined the club in the summer from Matlock Town, has already chalked up 28 goals in all competitions with still four months of the season to go.

Worksop’s run had club historians and statisticians throughout the NPL looking in to their records to see whether it was indeed a record. It is believed that the previous best was the 15-game winning run of Guiseley in 1994.

The league’s longest unbeaten run is 32, set by Boston United in 1972/73.

Sheffield are the next team looking to stop Worksop's run, when they host the Tigers on Saturday.
