EVO-STIK League newboys Spennymoor Town have handed defender Joe Tait a two year contract after bringing him to the Brewery Filed from Gateshead.

The centre-back, pictured sporting the club’s new away kit alongside manager Jason Ainsley after signing over the weekend, spent the second half of last season on loan at Darlington and helped the Quakers to the runners-up spot in First Division North.

The 24-year-old turned professional with Hartlepool United in 2006 and spent two seasons playing in his native United States before leaving MLS side Philadelphia Union to sign for Darlington in September 2012 following his return.

In the statement released by the First Division North club on Tuesday, Ainsley hailed Tait’s arrival before tipping him to make a big impression on the squad.

He said: "To bring a player of Joe’s calibre to Spennymoor Town on a two year contract speaks volumes of the progression we have made under the chairmanship of Bradley Groves. Centre-half was a position we have been looking at for a long time and we are delighted to have Joe on board.

"Joe has played at higher levels throughout his career and will be a massive presence both on and off the pitch. He is a natural leader which has impressed me whenever I have watched him play for Darlington and we wish him every success with us."

Tait said: "The enthusiasm and professionalism I got from the manager and the chairman made it a no brainier. This is where I want to play my football and I can't wait to get started and pay back the backing and support I’ve received from everyone at the club!"
