Asher leaves Grantham

Defender opts to move clubs.

Grantham Town joint Manager Jimmy Albans has that centre-half Alistair Asher has left the club. A fans favourite and regular over the last couple of seasons, Asher let the Gingerbreads management team know of his decision on Sunday evening.

“Alistair contacted us on Sunday.” Said Albans. “He said he has enjoyed his time at the club, but is going to play elsewhere. He felt he should have been in the side on Saturday, we felt we had picked three who played better than Ash would have. Ash said how much he felt it was a brilliant club and he has had a fantastic time at the club.”

Asher played 98 times for the club since joining midway through the 2009-10 season, scoring twice.

“Ash has been a great servant for us.” Albans said. “His attitude has been spot on and we are disappointed with his decision. We accept that we have a number of quality players on the bench at present who would rather be in the starting eleven, but given our results over the last 6-7 weeks, the side has pretty much picked itself.”

Albans expects Asher to sign for another club in the none too distant future, but does not think that he and fellow joint manager Wayne Hallcro will be rushing out to sign a replacement.

“We think that we have got enough cover in the squad for all positions at present.” Albans said. “That is not to say we are ruling out an additional signing in the future, but we need to make sure it is the right player for the right reasons. Although Gary Sucharewycz is not fit enough to train fully yet, we expect to have Steve Melton fully fit again in another week. We don’t believe we are threadbare at all, we have ready-made options for players in all outfield positions, for example, one of Martin Ball’s best performances for us was as a sweeper against Corby Town. We took the selection decision we did on Saturday and believe we put the best three defenders in the squad on the pitch to face Carlton Town.”
