Bank Holiday Monday's North Division action review

By David Watters

South Shields made it four wins from the opening four games of the new EVO-STIK League North season on Bank Holiday Monday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Northern League and Buildbase FA Vase champions ended Scarborough Athletic`s unbeaten start to the campaign with a 3-1 win at their new Flamingo Land Stadium in front of a terrific crowd of 1,667.

Matty Pattison gave Shields an early seventh minute lead that Luke Sullivan added to eight minutes later. Nathan Valentine reduced the deficit three minutes after that but the decisive moment came on the half-hour mark when Boro had Max Wright sent-off for kicking the ball away after a decision went against him.

Unfortunately for the player, a spectator was struck in the face and instead of a yellow card, he was shown a straight red. But the ten-man battled bravely and Shields were only able to add one more to their tally, with Sullivan netting his second of the game in the 52nd minute.

Mossley AFC also tasted defeat for the first time in 2017-18, losing the Tameside derby 2-0 at the Butcher`s Arms against Droylsden where a crowd of 329 saw Dominic Smith score on 31 minutes and Liam Caddick add a second Bloods goal 10 minutes later.

Another big crowd of 604 saw Hyde United maintain their unbeaten start with a goalless draw at Glossop North End, while Ramsbottom United and Colwyn Bay also stayed unbeaten.

Rammy won 3-0 at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium against Radcliffe Borough with goals from Luke Thompson after 21 minutes, Sam Heathcote just after the break and Ben Richardson five minutes from time.

Bay shared a 2-2 draw at Irongate with Bamber Bridge, whose Matt Dudley gave them a 19th minute lead. Will Booth equalised seven minutes after half-time, only for Matt Lawlor to restore Brig`s lead within a minute. Astley Mulholland rescued Bay with a stoppage time leveller.

Colne won for the first time this season, leaving Goole AFC, Ossett Albion, Trafford and Radcliffe as the only teams yet to claim a victory.

Colne beat Goole 4-0 at home, thanks to Dan Wilkins with two and Alex Curran inside the opening 12 minutes and then Mike Fish 20 minutes from time.

Albion have also lost all four, and Monday`s was the one they didn`t want to lose – to close rivals Ossett Town!

A crowd of 437 saw Martin Pembleton`s 10th minute opener for Town finally cancelled out by Danny South seven minutes from time. But Josh Snowden popped up with Town`s dramatic winner in stoppage time.

Trafford shared a 1-1 home draw with unbeaten new boys Atherton Collieries, who trailed to James Dean`s 55th minute effort until Iain Howard levelled from the spot 16 minutes from the end.

Tadcaster Albion earned Yorkshire bragging rights after they triumphed by the odd goal in five at Brighouse Town.

And Taddy trailed 2-0 inside the opening 6 minutes to goals from Jacob Buchanan and Aaron Martin too! However, the game turned on a 49th minute red card for Chandler Hallwood and a penalty to Taddy which Conor Sellars duly converted. And then goals in the final 10 minutes from Aiden Savory and Danny Frost sealed the ten-men`s fate.

Kendal Town took a 26th minute lead through Martin Grundy but Clitheroe earned a point at Parkside in the 1-1 draw, courtesy of a Kurt Willoughby effort nine minutes later.

Tunde Owolabi`s penalty three minutes after half-time broke the deadlock to give Prescot Cables the lead at Valerie Park against neighbours Skelmersdale United.

Experienced striker Richard Brodie levelled, also from the spot, three minutes later, only for Jordan Wynne to virtually go straight up the other end to make it 2-1 to the hosts. Michael Vaughan-Muscat then grabbed a last-gasp equaliser for Skem.
