Bank Holiday Monday's South Division action review

By David Watters

Newcomers Cleethorpes Town and Basford United both maintained their one hundred per cent starts to the new EVO-STIK League South season on Bank Holiday Monday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Clee inflicted a second defeat in 48 hours on Spalding United, who failed to recover from their 6-1 mauling at Newcastle Town.

Jon Oglesby and Andy Taylor punished a hesitant Tulips defence inside the opening five minutes! But they managed to pull themselves together and only conceded one more in the end from Tim Lowe five minutes after half-time to go down 3-0.

Basford were made to battle hard for their 1-0 home win over Loughborough Dynamo – Dean Meikle scoring the only goal after 10 minutes.

Fellow newcomers Peterborough Sports and Alvechurch along with Lincoln United maintained their unbeaten starts.

A crowd of 531 at the Zeeco Stadium saw Sports and hosts Stamford AFC share a 1-1 draw in which Jordan Smith`s 13th minute penalty for the Daniels was cancelled out by former Stamford forward Josh Moreman just before the half-hour mark.

Alvechurch ensured hosts Romulus remain without a win in emphatic fashion, winning 6-2 at Coles Lane with Daniel Dubidat helping himself to a hat-trick and Tom Turto a brace of penalties – Yusifu Ceesay adding a late sixth – Nathaniel Waite and Barry Fitzharris replying for the hosts.

Andy Toyne`s penalty right on half-time gave Lincoln the lead at Ashby Avenue against a Carlton Town side who have only been beaten once thus far before Kyle Stovell earned them a point 12 minutes from time.

Bedworth United and Belper Town both achieved first wins of the new season – the Greenbacks beating relegated Corby Town 2-0 at the Oval with goals from Levi Rowley after 24 minutes from the spot and Iyseden Christie in stoppage time.

The Nailers ensured hosts Gresley FC would still be searching for their first three-point haul after a 2-1 success in which Alex Steadman after just two minutes and Eric Graves after 21 minutes did enough to fend off the Moatmen, whose Matt Melbourne replied 13 minutes from time.

Frickley Athletic were the day's biggest winners in the division, going nap at Westfield Lane against Chasetown with Gavin Allott bagging three, his bother Gavin one and Carl Stewart also getting in on the act in the end.

Kidsgrove Athletic found themselves 2-0 up by the 11th minute at home to neighbours Newcastle Town, courtesy of a Lee Cropper brace – the second from the spot.

But Sam Wilson did likewise for Castle in the 23rd and 35th minutes and Aaron Bott scored what turned out to be the winner three minutes later.

Not far away at Harrison Park, Leek Town trailed unbeaten Market Drayton Town at the break, thanks to a goal right on the whistle from Dan Beddowes.

Drayton had drawn their previous three games but Leek had momentum once Tim Grice equalised from the spot in the 76th minute and Jordan Johnson won it five minutes later.

A crowd of 332 saw the derby between a yet-to-win Sheffield FC and Stocksbridge Park Steels, who took an eighth minute lead through Alex Wiles.

The home side eventually levelled on 64 minutes, courtesy of Jack Mawson, only for Richard Stirrup to restore Steels` lead with 11 minutes to go. But Mohammed Ibrahim ensured honours were even with an 82nd minute equaliser.
