Bank Holiday Monday's Premier Division review

By David Watters

A frost-hit Bank Holiday Monday saw the home game of EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division leaders Rushall Olympic with Coaville Town and three other top flight fixtures postponed, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And the chasing pack all took full advantage of the Pics inactivity.

Second-placed Whitby Town won 1-0 at Westfield Lane against a Frickley Athletic side hovering just above the drop zone, Matty Tymon`s 51st minute goal proving enough for the Seasiders.

Third-placed Buxton recovered from Boxing Day`s defeat to Matlock Town to win at Silverlands against Mickleover Sports.

But the Bucks left it late, with Brad Grayson`s penalty winner not coming until stoppage time at the end of the game.

A crowd of 673 saw Blyth Spartans stay in fourth place after a best-of-five win over Workington AFC at Croft Park.

The Reds led through Rob Wilson`s 35th minute effort at the break. But a quickfire Daniel Maguire brace in the 52nd and 55th minutes pulled the home side in front. Scott Allison equalised after 68 minutes but Maguire completed his hat-trick to win it for Blyth nine minutes from time.

Matlock Town remain in the final play-off spot due to their 1-0 win at struggling Ilkeston FC, Marcus Dinanga scoring the only goal at the New Manor Ground after 64 minutes to complete a good holiday period for the Gladiators.

Spennymoor Town could have overtaken Blyth and Matlock had they won their delayed game at bottom-markers Corby Town.

The match didn`t start until 4pm due to the Moors` coach being held up en-route and their bad day continued as the Steelmen finally brought an end to an eleven-game run without a win by securing a 3-1 success.

Phil Trainer and Stefan Moore gave the home side a two-goal interval lead as the visitors seemed to be suffering from bus fatigue. But Glen Taylor brought them back into the game shortly after the break, only for Moore to add his second and Corby`s third to give Gary Mills his first win since taking over as manager.

The Steelmen are still eleven points behind fifth-bottom Frickley, but they have at least remained unbeaten over the New Year holiday after last Friday`s draw with Halesowen Town.

Grantham Town are now just a point behind Spennymoor in seventh after a 2-0 win at Coles Lane against fourth-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town.

The deadlock wasn`t broken until 11 minutes from time when Harry Clifton put the Gingerbreads in front. And then Lee Shaw completed victory with a second for the visitors a minute from time.

Stourbridge, with games in hand on most above them, are ninth but only three points adrift of the top five after a 1-0 win at Kirkby Road against Barwell.

Jack Duggan`s goal 6 minutes into the second half proved decisive as they prepare for a return to the Emirates FA Cup next weekend.

Nantwich Town could have drawn level with the Glassboys had they won at home against lower mid-table Stafford Rangers.

However, this was another game won by a single strike, with Rangers` Izak Reid`s 34th minute goal winning the encounter in front of 780 at the Weaver Stadium.
