They had to work hard for the points as the visitors, prompted by the impressive Dale Hopson, asked plenty of questions of the Basford defence who responded with a solid display.
After an even opening spell, Liam Hearn gave Basford a 27th minute lead, heading in from James Reid’s cross.
Reid turned scorer after 35 minutes with a glorious finish, taking a pass 25 yards out before giving keeper Dan Dixon no chance with a low shot.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first, Basford’s resolute defending forcing Whitby to resort to long crosses which were capably dealt with by Kieran Preston in the Basford goal.
At the other end, Basford substitute Kole Lambert went close with his first touch of the ball to head over in the 70th minute
