Black backs Lucas to go on and on

Ossett Town manager Grant Black is backing Daz Lucas to make many more appearances for the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League club after notching up his fiftieth in their colours.

First signed by former manager John Reed from neighbours Ossett Albion in December 2014, the tenacious full-back, pictured, has been making his mark at Ingfield since returning in the summer via Shaw Lane after leaving at the end of last year to travel the world.

His moment to savour came in the club's 1-0 defeat in the Integro League Cup at home to EVO-STIK NPL First Division North rivals Scarborough Athletic in November. After being made skipper to celebrate his half century, it turned out to be a short-live appearance after the defender broke a finger early on, the injury later requiring a trip to hospital.

Hailing a player popular on and off the pitch, Black said: “He’s a great guy and a great player. He wants to be the best he can be which is great for a manager and we will push him as far as he can. I have no doubt he will go on to make many more appearances for Ossett Town.

"He is also great at collecting fines from the lads for things like being late or having the mobile on in the changing room, he is well known as the vice chairman!”

Midfielder Reece Farnhill agreed with his manager's final point ahead of the club's league fixture with Kendal Town at the 4G Voice & Data Stadium on Saturday, adding: “He’s very harsh with the fines, he jumps on everything!"

Lucas has three goals to his name from full-back, his first coming on his eighth appearance, the winner in a 1-0 victory at home to Prescot Cables. He doubled his tally four games later in a 2-1 defeat to Farsley Celtic, a game still remembered for keeper Brad Dixon being knocked out and young striker Rowen Binns pulling on the gloves for Town. His third goal game this season in the West Riding County Cup, a 5-1 victory at Eccleshill United.
