Bucks ready to make history

Buxton Chairman Tony Tomlinson is calling Saturday’s battling 0-0 draw in the FA Trophy at Grimsby one of the greatest results in their history ahead of Wednesday night’s replay at Silverlands.

The Bucks Chairman hailed manager Martin McIntosh for masterminding the triumph at Blundell Park as the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division club prepare to go again against the Conference Premier’s table-toppers.

Tomlinson now hopes Buxton can join King's Lynn Town and both Skelmersdale United and Matlock Town - who won their replays on Tuesday night against Boston and Mansfield respectively - in the next round by recording another historic result.

The Chairman told the Buxton Advertiser: "I am delighted for manager Martin McIntosh who has masterminded successful campaigns in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy, a rare achievement in the same season for a club at our level.

"Saturday’s draw must rank as one of the best results of recent times. Grimsby are at the top of the Blue Square Bet Premier and that current placing justifies a claim that they are the best team outside the Football League. Buxton play two divisions and some 60 places below so for us to achieve that result is the equivalent of League One Colchester United holding Manchester United at Old Trafford."

The winner of the First Round Replay will face either Braintree or Havant & Waterlooville in the competition’s last 32 and the chance to bank another £6,000 in FA prize money.

Tomlinson, who is sure Grimsby won't be taking any chances the second time around after their shock result at the weekend, added: "They [Grimsby] obviously took the game very seriously. Their manager turned up to watch us at Nantwich and eight of the Grimsby team that started on Saturday had played against Braintree in the league the previous weekend and won 3-0."

Kick-off at Silverlands is 7.45pm with the tie decided by extra-time and penalties if required. Visit the website's 'Match Info' tab on matchdays for the latest classified results.
