Defender's back to strengthen Pitmen challenge

Hednesford Town manager Rob Smith reinforced his Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division side's promotion push on Wednesday by bringing defender Sam Craven back to Keys Park from Conference North Boston United.

The Pitmen recorded their eleventh victory of the campaign on Tuesday night with a 2-0 home win and another clean sheet against Ilkeston and Smith believes Craven will add even more competition for places in his backline.

Craven was on the bench for the Robins clash that cemented the Pitmen's hold on second spot and returned following a loan spell last season which was cut short by an injury.

Smith said: "Sam really wanted to sign for us which is very encouraging. He gives us extra defensive cover across the central and left side. Sam can operate in midfield too and he gives us strength and versatility.”

Craven will push the defensive trio of Sam Barnes, Francino Francis and Ben Bailey for a place in the team. Smith also confirmed that with the club's budget set at least one member of his current squad may now be on his way out following Craven's arrival.

He added: "Unfortunately one squad member will have to go as it’s strictly one in one out with us."
