Burscough mourn loyal servant

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Burscough are mourning the loss of club stalwart Roy Baldwin.

A Life Vice-President at the First Division North's Linnets, he passed away over weekend after a long battle with lung cancer aged 78.

The official, pictured, started out watching the club as a youngster and began supporting them in a more active role after playing for Newburgh United. Sports mad, he also played cricket for Newburgh and went on to become an active member of Burscough's Committee. He was a member of the club's Board in 2003 when they won the FA Trophy at Villa Park and was also awarded the Lancashire FA Order of Merit for services to local football.

A club spokesman added: "It is with great sadness Burscough FC announce that long time servant to the club Roy Baldwin, passed away over the weekend after a long battle with cancer. Roy was a tremendous servant to Burscough Football Club and football across the local area. His enthusiasm for the club was second to none and he will be missed by all."

Burscough Treasurer Stuart Heaps paid tribute to his fellow official. He added: "Roy was a stalwart of Burscough FC having been Vice Chairman for many years under Frank Parr and he was an active member of Burscough FC's committee throughout.

"Roy carried out any tasks that needed to be done to keep the club running smoothly. He has not been in good health recently but the club was always in his thoughts. Roy will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Roy."

Burscough say funeral arrangements will be announced when available.
