Carruthers is counting on cup run

By David Watters

Basford United boss Martin Carruthers is looking to see his EVO-STIK League club kick off on another cup in the Buildbase FA Trophy on Saturday after their exploits in the Emirates FA Cup.

After banking more than £8,000 in prize money alone from their run to the Third Qualifying Round, EVO-STIK League South newcomers and rivals Peterborough Sports stand in the way of Carruthers, pictured, and his side in a 3pm kick-off at Greenwich Avenue.

Another £3,000 in prize money is up for grabs in the competition's preliminary round but its not just about the cash for Carruthers who overcame Staveley Miners Welfare in the Emirates FA Cup's Preliminary Round and dispatched EVO-STIK League Premier Division opponents Halesowen Town and Mickleover Sports before being knocked out by Kettering Town last Saturday.

Ahead of this weekend's tie, he told fans: "The Trophy is another game that we want to win. We enjoyed the run in the FA Cup and want to repeat it in the Trophy.

"The team are developing a winning mentality which applies to every game in whatever competition we are in. We know Saturday will be a tough game as Peterborough will want to progress as much as we do."
