Champions reunited for fundraiser

By David Watters

Eastwood Town’s Northern Premier League championship-winning team of 2009 are kicking off together again today (Sunday) in a charity fundraiser to support the wife of former striker Marc Smith.

Stars from the now defunct former EVO-STIK League club are taking on Clifton All Stars to raise funds for Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital where the ex-Badgers striker's wife Shelley is being treated after being diagnosed with incurable cervical cancer.

Smith, who had to spells with the club which folded in 2014, will be joined by former team-mates Chris Shaw, Peter Knox, Andy Todd and Lindon Meikle among others for a 1.30pm kick-off at Clifton's Norman Archer Memorial Ground.

Tickets are priced at £5 for the fundraising fixture which will also feature former Derby County defender Michael Johnson and ex-Norwich City striker Darren Huckerby playing for their opponents.

Smith, who also played for Harrogate Town, Guiseley and Armthorpe Welfare, said: “It’s tough, it really is – you can’t explain it. You just try to do the best you can supporting my wife and three kids.

“Weston Park Cancer Hospital in Sheffield are doing a great job. I go with my wife when she has chemotherapy and the work the nurses do under great pressure is absolutely brilliant – my wife wouldn’t be here now without them.

“It will be a good occasion. We’re having an auction afterwards with lots of signed shirts, footballs and football boots. Hopefully on the day people put their hands in their pockets and start bidding.”
