Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

The Basford United bandwagon continues to roll on, the EVO-STIK League South leaders making it 27 games unbeaten on Saturday with a comfortable 3-0 home win over bottom side Peterborough Sports, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Liam Hearn gave the champions-elect an early sixth minute lead that he doubled just past the half-hour mark. As conditions worsened, Aidan Austin added a third for the Nottinghamshire side seven minutes from time.

The game of the day on a weather-hit Saturday though was on the east coast where Cleethorpes Town moved into third place after a 3-1 home win over a now fourth-placed Bedworth United side.

Danny North gave Clee an early seventh minute lead that Levi Rowley levelled on 32 minutes. Liam Davis restored Cleethorpes' lead two minutes before the break and a third with five minutes remaining from Mark Gray ensured the points stayed at home and saw the coastal outfit leap-frog the Greenbacks in the table.

Frickley Athletic are now second after edging out Leek Town by the odd goal in five at Westfield Lane.

The Blues led through Jameel Ible after 27 minutes and Jacob Hazel three minutes into the second half. Jordan Johnson reduced the arrears after 76 minutes, then Tom Dugdale made it 3-1 in the first minute of stoppage time, with Tim Grice immediately pulling a second back for Leek.

Alvechurch are fifth after a 1-0 win at Ashby Avenue against Lincoln United, a goal from Luke Yates after 33 minutes proved enough for the visitors.

Stamford AFC occupy the final play-off spot were could only manage a 0-0 draw at third-bottom Sheffield FC.

After a stunning run which took them from the relegation zone to the play-off places, Corby Town are now down in ninth after suffering a fourth successive defeat – 1-0 at Belper Town.

A goal from Lee Williamson 16 minutes from time proved decisive at Christchurch Meadow.

And the Romulus revival continues as a third game without defeat and first win of 2018 lifted them to fourth-bottom, two points above the bottom spot.

They beat Loughborough Dynamo 4-0 at Coles Lane with goals from Zak Lilly after 33 minutes and then a Callum Coyle hat-trick in the 64th, 72nd and 90th minutes.
