Christmas Monday's First Division North review

By David Watters

Northwich Victoria and Warrington Town head into the New Year level on points at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North table after both won on Christmas Monday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Vics still possess three games in hand and they won the derby against Witton Albion 2-1 at Wincham Park, thanks to goals from Gary Burnett after 43 minutes and Richard Bennett five minutes after the break. Rob Hopley replied 18 minutes from time in front of an excellent crowd of 734.

Warrington enjoyed a more comfortable 4-1 win at Cantilever Park against Trafford in front of 408.

The Wire had a great start with two goals in the opening seven minutes from Dan O`Donnell and Ciaran Kilheeney. Kilheeney added his second and Warrington`s third after 21 minutes.

The visitors managed to stem the flow and eventually reduced the arrears just past the hour-mark with a Curtis McDonald penalty but Danny Ventre restored the home side`s three-goal lead 11 minutes from time.

Ossett Albion are third and maintained their top five challenge after edging the local derby with Ossett Town by the odd goal in five at Ingfield in front of 663.

Andy Hawksworth gave Town a 24th minute lead that former home favourite Rob Bordman cancelled out nine minutes later. Dominic Riordan put Albion in front five minutes into the second half, only for David Brown to equalise on the hour-mark. Bordman then popped up in stoppage time to take the points and local bragging rights.

Glossop North End are fourth after a 2-0 win at home against a still win-less and pointless New Mills.

In front of 529, the Hillians won with goals from Jamie Rainford after 11 minutes and Kieran Lugsden eight minutes into the second half.

There was a shock for Spennymoor Town as they looked to get back amongst the top five contenders.

The Moors were beaten 4-0 at home by mid-table Farsley Celtic. The majority of the crowd of 500 were stunned by a very good performance by the visitors, for whom Aaron Hardy broke the deadlock 12 minutes into the second half.

Ross Daly added a second six minutes later and a minute after that Lewis Nightingale made it game over, although Paul Walker added the icing on the cake with a fourth 12 minutes from time.

Lancaster City looked like drawing at Valerie Park against Prescot Cables as the game entered injury-time with the score 2-2 after Joe Nicholson and Daryl Paton had cancelled out Tom Kilifin`s brace for the Dolly Blues. But Terry Cummings popped up with City`s winner in time added on.

It was the same scoreline but not quite as dramatic a finish as troubled Kendal Town edged Radcliffe Borough at Parkside.

Given the weather in Cumbria, Kendal did superbly to get the game on and Charlie Bailey celebrated with a hat-trick in the 27th, 46th and 66th minutes, replies came from Jamie Forbes on 17 minutes and Matt Davies on 28 minutes.

More woes for managerless Scarborough Athletic, beaten in the Yorkshire derby at Brighouse Town.

A Peter Davidson own goal three minutes after the break gave Town the lead that Jamie Forrester cancelled out 19 minutes from time. But Adam Wilson won it for the hosts with five minutes to go.

The Tameside derby at the Butcher`s Arms saw Droylsden and Mossley AFC share a 1-1 draw in which Godwin Abadaki cancelled out James Hampson`s 25th minute opener with 17 minutes remaining.
