Clock ticking down to big fundraiser

Marine’s excited fans, players, officials and sponsors are counting down the days to teeing off at the EVO-STIK League club’s annual golf day.

Taking place at the prestigious Hesketh Golf Club in Southport on Monday 4 September, the Mariners are now putting the finishing touches to their plans for the 17th running of the event which is always a key fundraiser in the EVO-STIK League Premier Division club’s calendar.

With enrollment starting at 11.30am and the course approving a shotgun start at 1.30pm, a total of 11 organisations and companies are already supporting the event with 14 teams entered in the Four Ball tournament, won last year by Arriva North West & Wales Ltd.

Marine chairman Paul Leary will hand out the accolades and prizes to the 2017 winners, including the magnificent Marine FC 120th anniversary trophy, at the awards dinner afterwards at Southport’s oldest golf club.

In a statement from the Marine Travel Arena on Tuesday thanking everybody supporting the event, the Mariners chairman hailed their host's facilities.

He said: “We are really pleased that the officials at Hesketh Golf Club have agreed to host our very special fundraising day. Having visited the clubhouse and met some of the staff we had no hesitation in formally requesting the use of the excellent venue for our golf day.

“The facilities and course is absolutely first class and I am sure that the change in venue to Hesketh Golf Club will provide a fresh interest in our tournament in addition to the course providing a new challenge for our golfers.”

Leary added: “I look forward to another great day for our golfers and in completely new surroundings it will give the event that extra special interest for those involved. I am sure that this new partnership between Hesketh Golf Club and Marine FC will be a success, not only for our first event this September but also in future years.”

Thanking the event's supporters individually, a Mariners spokesman said: “Marine wish to thank the following companies for continuing to support their key fundraiser, IMCD UK Ltd, ForWorks, Sinclair Goldberg Price Ltd, Sefton UNISON, H+I Chemicals Ltd, Arriva North West & Wales Ltd, Fibre Drums Ltd and welcome the following companies who are making their debut this year: Furnival’s Well, 1-2-1 Claims Ltd, Slater & Gordon and St James Place Wealth Management."

The spokesman added: “Marine also wish to thank the following companies and individuals who are to be hole sponsors on the day, JPC Printing & Stationery Ltd, Subway, Chryso, Ogdens Travel, Dave O’Brien, McMillan Associates, Giles Horton and Dave Pugh.”

Established in 1885, Hesketh is pre-dominantly links in nature. Championship golf has been played at Hesketh from the early days. In addition to being a previous qualifying venue when The Open was played at nearby Royal Birkdale, Hesketh has hosted many other professional and amateur championships. Most recently, it hosted the Junior Open in 2008 and co-hosted the Amateur Championship with nearby Hillside in 2011.
