Cup send off for departing duo

Ashton United's joint managers Paul Phillips and Steven Halford are set to take charge of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Robins for the last time on Saturday in The Emirates FA Cup before leaving for Stalybridge Celtic.

Appointed three years ago as the successors to Craig Robinson, the duo, pictured, insisted on taking charge of the first round qualifying tie with Nantwich Town at Hurst Cross before replacing former Southport boss Liam Watson after he left Bower Fold on Wednesday.

Halford stood down at EVO-STIK NPL First Division North Mossley after two years at the helm of the Lilywhites to team up with keeper Phillips who was already part of the management team at the Robins.

In a statement announcing their surprise departure after guiding the club to a fourth placed finish in the EVO-STIK NPL's top flight last season, officials paid tribute to the pair for their work and loyalty but critised their National League North neighbours for the manner of their approach.

Ashton United chairman Terry Hollis said: "On behalf of the directors and fans of Ashton United I would like to sincerely thank Steve and Paul for their time at Hurst Cross and wish them both the very best of luck at their new club.

"They have done a fantastic job for us over the past three seasons, the best we have had for many a year, and a period that has helped put Ashton United firmly on the Non-League map. It has been a real pleasure to work with both lads and they will always be welcomed with open arms at Ashton United.

"I would like to place on record my disappointment at the way Stalybridge Celtic has conducted the move for our management team, particularly given the fact that I was once associated with the club and know people there very well.

"No contact was received by Ashton United from any Stalybridge Celtic official and it is understood that Stalybridge Celtic wanted Paul and Steve to take over at Bower Fold with immediate effect, leaving Ashton United manager less on the eve of our important FA cup tie, something that Paul and Steve, to their credit, declined to do."

Steps are underway to appoint a caretaker manager and officials say applications for the newly vacant managerial post role will be accepted in due course.
