The Doodson Sport Cup

Skelmersdale United made the headlines in this week's Doodson Sport Cup, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North high-flyers hammered neighbours and league rivals Prescot Cables 7-1 at the West Lancashire College Stadium.

And it was an especially good Tuesday evening for debutant Matty Hughes, who netted a hat-trick alongside a double for Mark Houghton and singles for Adam Morning and Jonah Riley.

Skem manager Tommy Lawson had another good night too. Apart from seeing his side progress to book a Second Round tie at home to Cammell Laird, Lawson also picked up his third managerial award of the campaign when he was presented with the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North Manager of the Month award before kick off.

Goole AFC put their league struggles in the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North behind them to progress in the league's cup competition with a 3-2 win at league rivals Wakefield.

Lee Turner gave the home side a ninth minute lead that Chris Ovington levelled from the spot three minutes later and then just four minutes after that the Vikings were in front through Lee Swift. Lee Conner added Goole's third in the 65th minute with Wakefield reducing the arrears seven minutes from time with a spot kick from Chris Hutchings.

Michael Oates was once more on target as Evo-Stik NPL First Division North Trafford beat Evo-Stik NPL First Division South Leek Town 3-1 at Shawe View.

Oates opened the scoring after six minutes and then Shelton Payne after 18 minutes and Kamahl Wright nine minutes before the break gave the hosts a three-goal half-time cushion that Dan Cope reduced to two after 73 minutes.

Chasetown won the all-Evo-Stik NPL First Division South encounter on the 3G at Coles Lane against Romulus 2-0 with goals from Danny Smith after just four minutes and Richard Teesdale six minutes later.

Farsley FC won the Yorkshire derby at Throstle Nest 2-1 against Evo-Stik NPL First Division North rivals Ossett Albion.

Adam Priestley bagged both for the home side in the first and 49th minutes – Darol Lucas sandwiching a reply on the half-hour mark.

Wednesday's only game in the competition saw new boss Lee Ashcroft win a second successive game in charge of Northwich Victoria as they beat First Division South rivals Kidsgrove Athletic 2-0 at Marston Road.

It was two of Ashcroft's former Kendal players – Joe Bunney and Alex Taylor – who were on the mark in either half.
